"On your left!" has a long history of use. However, using it, you may discover those few people who can't quite hear it and think we're saying, "Move to the left!" and so they do, resulting in collision. If I may, I have found that "Rider back!" works much better, as walkers instead, reply by slowing, and turning their heads back to see what's coming.

League of American Bicyclists Certified instructors are offering the League's Smart Cycling Courses at a number of Chicago area locations. They will also help you to set up private courses for your own park district, organization, club, company, or group of friends.

I've never had that problem with "on your left!", but I can see how it might happen. "Rider back!" seems like a great solution. After all, the goal is crash avoidance! Thanks for your comments!

Perhaps worth mentioning that harrows can sometimes be placed incorrectly in the gutter zone, depending on jurisdiction.
